Experimental Pieces
The idea behind my coursework project was to explore portraiture and the emotions behind different techniques and materials when creating portraits. As you can see below, acrylic paint, watercolour, biro pens, ink and textured paint were all experimented with, but I decided on tonal pencil drawings.
I did this because I believe the simplicity of the medium means the emotion of the piece is conveyed easily. The audience is able to understand the final goal and atmosphere the artist is trying to create.

FINAL PIECE
My final piece is a display of mental health and its effect on teenagers in todays society. Each tonal piece expresses the 3 emotions I felt on a daily basis in the beginnings of the untreated and undiagnosed teenage depression. The emotions someone appears to feel, the wishing for normalcy, and the anger and toil going on beyond the surface.
The framing pieces represents the masks myself and others place over themselves to hide their feelings and who they really are. How the facades fracture over time, are stitched together and never are the real thing.
